    Description

    Item Description:
For sale today is a solid state FLASH module based MSM or Mass Storage Module for Data I/O 2900 programmers.
This board does not support the parallel port for the 3980XPI.
    P
ictures are typical of the actual item, the 2900 is not included.  The board is held in place by the connector friction and uses two rubber feet to space the board off of the circuitry on the 2900 main board. The FLASH module supplied may vary but all provide the maximum disk space supported by the 2900 software.
    Condition:
This is a new (for now, hand assembled) MSM for the 2900 and 3900 series programmers. It makes a 3900 into a 3980, not sure what the 2900 would be called with the MSM installed.. With this module the system boots in about 30-40 seconds not including self test time. No more floppy disks needed except to copy your software to the flash drive. The flash drive comes pre-formatted with the required C, D, H, and I partitions.
    1. Remove the top cover by removing 3 screws (under the foam on older models) and two screws in the back. Pull up on the cover to remove it.
    2. Plug board into the mating connector on the 2900 main board, see second picture.
    3. Locate the MSM board connector all the way to the back of the mating connector on the 2900. Look in at the connector from the side closest to the connector to verify the alignment.
    4.
Be very careful, there is +15V on one of the connector pins and improper insertion can damage the MSM board and possibly the 2900.
Two extra pictures were added to the listing showing the 20 pins (2 rows of 10) that must be open after the MSM module is plugged in to the connector.
    5. You will have to transfer your software to the MSM by booting from floppy and copying the software (see the 2900 or 3900 manual for instructions).
There also instructions on line in the DATA I/O Group at Groups.IO.
    6.
Once everything is programmed and working, replace the top cover in reverse order from step 1.
The 2900 or 3900 software must be version 6.1 or later to use the MSM. These boards were tested in a 2900 (same interface as the 3900) with V9.4.
    Additional info:
The original MSMs in some of these units used PCMCIA drives. The PCMCIA drive format was short lived due to their fragility and short life span.
A failed drive will lock up the 2900, even if booting from a floppy disk. A PCMCIA MSM board without a PCMCIA drive installed can also lock up the 2900.
